Palace of Diocletian

Mike or Wikipedia can provide more skinny on Diocletian but he was a highly effective, late third-century “Roman” emperor. He actually ruled from Nicomedia, just east of what would soon be called Constantinople. He is the only Roman emperor to retire from office. This area being rather pleasant, he decided to build a little retirement home on the waterfront which is essentially now the center of the town of Split.

The current site is a blend of ruins from the 4th century and subsequent Christian era churches and other construction. Diocletian did not build churches but mostly burned them. His successor was Constantine who was more supportive.
